Tradition and Inspiration

The latest floor coverings for the contract sector add a new, playful twist to established materials and products.

When it comes to designing properties like shops, restaurants or hotel rooms, floor coverings play a fundamental role – in a very literal sense. They have to satisfy a wide variety of demands: carpets or wooden floors for the contract sector ought to be robust, durable and low-maintenance, preferably manufactured sustainably and, of course, look good as well. Meanwhile, current developments are going one step further, often giving a playful new twist to traditional materials and products. Floor coverings are being deliberately designed to look old, for instance – carpets or wooden floors with a "used look" owe their individual character to irregularities and signs of wear. Flooring materials like ceramic or plastic are being given a new appearance and don't just look like wood, natural stone or metal but have the same feel as well thanks to textured surfaces. Classic products for the floor like hand-knotted or woven carpets are inspiring designers to come up with unusual new creations and combining traditional production methods with ultramodern design.

At the LivingInteriors event, which will be held parallel to the imm cologne from 13th to 19th January 2014, exhibitors will be showing the creative and material-related possibilities associated with new products in this segment. LivingInteriors presents integrated interior and furnishing concepts for bathrooms, flooring, wall covering and lighting in conjunction with home textiles. As the fair approaches, we present some of the latest product and design solutions that cleverly link the tried-and-tested with the new – a selection from the diverse range of floor coverings for the contract sector available from exhibitors.
